Every year, up to 1500 cranes and other migratory birds gather in the winter quarters on the perides of Vale de Camelos.
The biotopes created by the accumulation of rainwater offer retreat sustenals for various bird species, such as the trappers that have become extinct in many areas. Various bird protection zones overlap in the area of the Herdade dos Lagos , e.g. the ZEPA (Zona de Proteca’ de Aves) of the “Trappen-Castro Verde Area”.
